It is an important concern of the coal mining community to mine coal in a safe and efficient manner. China is faced with great challenges of mine safety due to the complicated geological conditions and high gas emissions of coalmines that tend to result in frequent accidents. Mine gas is a clean energy source; its proper exploitation can benefit economic development, the environment, and mine safety as well. To improve the technological and managerial standard of gas control in Chinese coal mines, the State General Administration of Work Safety and the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety of China together with the International Labor Organization will co-sponsor the International Seminar on Gas Control and Utilization in October 2005 in Beijing, China. The seminar will focus on exchange and cooperation in the fields of technologies of preventing gas accidents, gas control and utilization, forecasting of the market for gas utilization, and relevant legislations and policies. We believe that this seminar will play a positive role not only in helping improve the technological and managerial standard of gas control in Chinese coal mines, but also promoting the exchange and cooperation between China and other countries in the field of coal mine safety.
